In contemporary culture, it is easy to get swept up in the institutionalized routine of everyday life. We spend the majority of our time in man-made buildings, adhering to the standards and expectations of other people, rather than exploring who we are outside of the confines of our society. Sanctuary explores the reestablishment of connections between an individual and his or her natural surroundings, amid our materialistic culture. It is presented as a performance in combination with an assemblage. The audience observes the artist dressed in nude clothing interacts with a long velvety cloak decorated with foliage and a train assembled to appear like a topographical landscape. The earth is the true home of every human being, as we are products of the natural world. Therefore, we must treat it with care and respect. The performance serves as a wake-up call.
